SEDIS – Maintenance Free Solutions

Purpose & context
Maintenance‑free chain families are engineered to reduce or eliminate routine relubrication without compromising fatigue strength or elongation resistance. They are essential where access is restricted, contamination by oil must be avoided, or hygiene protocols require dry running.

Construction

  • Self‑lubricating bush/pin interfaces using porous media or solid lubricants that migrate to the contact during articulation.
  • Precision‑matched clearances to stabilize load sharing across the pitch and to slow wear elongation.
  • Surface finishes and anti‑corrosion treatments tailored to moisture, detergents and condensate exposure.

Operating window

  • Best suited to low‑to‑medium speeds with frequent start/stop, where hydrodynamic films are intermittent.
  • Temperatures typically limited by the solid‑lube matrix; verify rating vs. duty cycle.
  • Clean environments extend service life; abrasive fines require shields or guided covers.

Sizing workflow

  1. Estimate design power and convert to tangential chain pull; apply a duty/service factor for shock or reversing load.
  2. Select pitch by permissible working load and desired sprocket size; check minimum teeth to control chordal speed variation.
  3. Confirm expected elongation and set a replacement threshold (1.5–2.0% commonly used) to protect sprockets and guides.

Integration & maintenance

  • Use stainless or polymer guides to reduce noise and side wear.
  • Plan periodic cleaning rather than oiling; document chain length checks at fixed intervals.
  • Where indexing accuracy is critical, pre‑load the take‑up and monitor drift in encoder counts.
